The Mississippi Animal Rescue League is preparing for Isaac!
MARL began disaster preparations Friday for Isaac. MARL provides housing for displaced animals during disasters and hurricane season can be a busy time for us.
During Hurricane Gustav in 2008, your Mississippi Animal Rescue League housed 175 animals displace by the storm. We are the evacuation site for up to 5 shelters (2 in Mississippi and 3 in Louisiana) as well as the public who need a place for their animals.
In addition to providing housing for the animals, we provide vaccinations and other medical care as needed. A lot of these animals arrive really stressed and need medication to help calm them. MARL has a hospital and staff veterinarian to help with these needs.
Our expenses run quite high during disasters. We have to buy extra food, litter, disinfectant, vaccines are a huge expense, I.D. tags, food and water for staff and volunteers.
Our largest expense is staff overtime. Our staff is at the shelter as many as hours as needed during the disaster. It takes many hours of prep, hours and hours of phone time most of the time into the late hours of the night.
All of the services we provide are done free of charge to the disaster victims, and we will not turn any animal away. Donations are very important to us during these times.
We are asking for your help during this time. As during every emergency, we know that we can count on our supporters to help us through this. Our immediate needs are: dry dog/puppy and
cat/kitten food (Purina or Pedigree), bottled water, paper towels, laundry detergent, bleach, hand sanitizer, Odoban.
Monetary donations are always appreciated also for all of our other needs. Follow this link to help with our disaster preparation: http://www.msarl.org/?page_id=51.
As always, thank you so much!
