About Sweet Boy

Meet Sweet Boy. We are looking for a forever home where he will be inside with family and have a safe fenced yard for outside time. We want to share his story.
Sweet Boy and two other dogs lived in rural Hinds County. All three dogs lived on 6 to 8 ft chains attached around their necks, no collars. They were given only minimal attention, fed once a day and watered if the person remembered. One dog was chained in the back yard inside a pen. The other two dogs were chained in the front yard to trees. One had a plastic dog house that stayed in two pieces more often than it stayed together. The other dog had a plastic carrier. It was suitable for about a 30 lb. dog and with the air opening, had no protection from cold or blowing rain. Sweet Boy weighs about 55 to 60
lbs. These dogs had no life except a little food and water daily, about 5 minutes with one of the kids that brought out the food and passing traffic. This was rental property. We called and called and called the property owner to make suggestions for better care. He would talk with them but any changes did not last.
Hinds County no longer has active animal control officers only one deputy that has numerous positions at the sheriff's dept. and responds mostly for bite cases. For years we had two great ACOs in the county, David Fisher and Mac James. Sadly they both retired.
Ms. Cindy, a retired lady lives across the street and could see all three of the dogs. She started feeding the dogs and checking their water after the man left for the day. If they were tangled from the chain, she untangled them. She provided collars so the chains would not rub their necks. When the weather became hot she would give them ice cream sandwiches. We asked her to see if they would release the dogs. The owner was in and out and not easy to catch up with. The man finally agreed to release one of the females. One of our staff lives in the area and picked the dog up the very next morning. Ms Cindy continued to feed the dogs. MARL provided worm medication. MARL again expressed concern the the property manager. We asked if we provided a pet policy agreement for new tenants if his company would implement them. They are considering it and we hope they follow through.
A little time passed and we became aware that the people were being evicted. We asked Ms Cindy to check again to see if he would release the other two dogs. He agreed to release the male but would not give up the last female. Ms Cindy notified us and we picked him up the next morning. Ms Cindy met our staff person and Sweet Boy (named by our staff person that picked him up) was so sweet and loving when we arrived. When they opened the door to see him, he put his front legs in the car and leaned his head against them. He never made a sound on the way back to the shelter. It was if he knew his life was about to be so much better. And so it has been but it is now time for Sweet Boy to get his own forever family who will love him. We want him to know what it is like to trust people, to feel the love and security a good home brings. What it feels like to stretch out on the floor at night with his own family near by, his favorite toy beside him, a bedtime treat, a soft bed and not living outside, alone on an 8 foot chain.
Sweet Boy would love an older child (school age, he is a big boy) to run and play with and cuddle with at night. Someone to toss a ball and car rides with the family. A home where he will be warm in the winter and get relief from our hot summer days. If you are looking for an adult dog, he is about 3 years old and he will love you beyond what you can imagine. Do you have room in your home and heart for Sweet Boy? He needs his happy ever after. Come visit....you will fall in love in a flash!
NOTE: This case was just not strong enough for charges to be filed. We want to thank Ms Cindy for all she did for the dogs and for helping us to get a release on the two that we got
